Choosing skylight glass takes more than looking at its color or thickness. Location, opening size, slope, climate, and the use of the room below all affect the glazing and structure. A stained glass skylight also commonly needs protection and weatherproofing separate from its decorative panel.
Safety and glass position
Glazing above people must be specified for overhead use and the project's conditions. Tempered and laminated glass are familiar options, but the final selection and layer order require technical design. Ask proposals to identify every layer and explain its safety and protective role.
Daylight and comfort
Clear, colored, textured, and solar-control glass each change the light entering a space. Even light may be the priority for a stairwell; a lobby may also use colored shadows. Check sun direction, glare, and unwanted heat before finalizing colors and finishes.
Questions to ask when ordering
- How will water drain, and how are joints sealed?
- How will the exterior surface be reached for cleaning and inspection?
- Is the decorative panel separate from the outer protective glazing?
- Who is responsible for checking the structure and specifying safe glass?
What does each layer do?
Some designs place decorative glass inside a separate exterior assembly that protects against weather. Others combine functions in one glazing system. Material names alone are insufficient: specify each layer's position, restraint, and behavior if another layer breaks.
The National Glass Association glazing manual treats the room-side layer of sloped and overhead glazing as a distinct consideration. It does not replace project-specific engineering, but helps explain why a vertical window specification cannot simply be reused overhead.
When will the skylight be seen?
A sunny midday rendering shows only one lighting condition. Assess mornings, evenings, and cloudy days too. Sun angles change colored reflections, glare, and pattern visibility. In a commercial space or stairwell, a visitor's position and movement also matter. A sample tested on site reveals more than a catalogue photo.
Plan maintenance from the start
The exterior collects dust and rain, and joints need inspection. Decide how cleaning, drainage checks, and eventual panel replacement will work before construction. Never treat skylight glass as walkable unless it was specifically designed for that use; the NGA technical note explains the distinction.
